This letter is to recognize the achievement of Energy Optimizations effort in saving energy for Samsung SDI.

On the 30th of September 2002, Energy Optimization concluded an energy saving project on the chiller plant in all three factories. The goal is to reduce electrical consumption by 10% on the chiller operating load.

The operation of the factories requires air conditioning for process and comfort cooling on 24 hours basis. Out of 7,800 tons of cooling capacity and 5,300 tons are normally used on a daily basis. Operators in each chiller plant manually adjust the chillers as and when necessary to maintain the required supply of chilled water temperature.

Energy Optimization optimized each of the three chillers system by using the Chiller Optimizer Millennium series C. Each chiller was also metered to record and verify daily, weekly and monthly consumption figures. An energy consumption baseline was developed for each chiller system by recording the number of kilowatts used by each chiller over 2 months period. Once the baseline was established the Optimizers were turned on and controlled the loading and unloading of the chillers automatically.

The task of the Optimizers was to maintain the required temperatures at the Air Handling Units and save energy in the process. The Optimizer operates by sensing the building load utilizing Outside Air and Return Chilled Water. This allows the Optimizer to control the chiller system to respond to the changes that affect the load thus making the chillers operate as close to the level of the actual building load as possible. Energy wastage is minized and efficiency is greatly improved. The Optimizer saves energy during peak and off peak periods.

At the end of the two months verification period, the Optimizer system saved an Average of 15% of the consumption on the normal operating loads without the negative effect to the production. The saving in Malaysian Ringgit is about RM 70,000 per month.
